The first volume (containing books I-III) won both the British and World Fantasy Awards, as the public lapped up the gore soaked pages. Stephen King, already deemed an undisputed master in the genre, went as far as to pronounce Clive Barker to be “the future of horror”. The release exploded within the horror literature scene, hailing Barker as an exciting and imaginative newcomer. Written in his spare time, he was not expecting them to really sell at all, let alone did he predict the phenomenal public response that followed. First published back in November of 1984, British author Clive Barker made his name within the deeply competitive world of horror with the publication of the first three books of his macabre short stories collection ‘The Books Of Blood’ all in one collective volume. ![]() A well behaved woman by fowler7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() Meet Alva Smith Vanderbilt Belmont, living proof that history is made by those who know the rules-and how to break them. With a nod to Jane Austen and Edith Wharton, in A Well-Behaved Woman Therese Anne Fowler paints a glittering world of enormous wealth contrasted against desperate poverty, of social ambition and social scorn, of friendship and betrayal, and an unforgettable story of a remarkable woman. But Alva also defied convention for women of her time, asserting power within her marriage and becoming a leader in the women's suffrage movement. Ignored by New York’s old-money circles and determined to win respect, she designed and built nine mansions, hosted grand balls, and arranged for her daughter to marry a duke. However, the approaches, ideas and conclusions presented here will find application in ecosystem studies and in nature conservation around the world. Embedding this approach into current ecological thinking this book presents an overview of ideas set in the exemplar case study area of the British Isles. Whether or not conservationists accept ecological change, factors such as urbanisation and globalisation combine with climate and other changes to trigger new hybrid communities and ecologies. However, much current thinking in ecology and nature conservation fails to accommodate the consequences of changing environmental conditions and fusion of both species and ecological communities. Invasive and non-native or alien species are spreading, often aggressively around the globe. With massive climate change and other environmental fluxes, this volume provides insight into consequences for future ecologies. Synthesising current ideas and approaches the book develops an historic context to ecological fusion and recombinant or hybrid ecosystems. This is a challenging new approach to understanding ecological systems especially in urban and urbanised areas. ![]() A Reluctant Bride by Jody Hedlund7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() The author writes with an easy-to-follow prose that guides the reader without confusion. The descriptions of locations and emotions were well done and easy to visualize. How much baggage do we carry with us in life? Do we unconsciously drag it along life's pathway hindering our forward progression? These were questions I pondered as I read this book. They were people I easily became attached to. I liked the relationship of caring that Joseph and Mercy had with each other.I was intrigued by the premise of a bride ship headed to Vancouver.A wealthy Lord that was a doctor and a woman who came from the slums of London. The evolution of horror movies, Halloween parties, and costumes as well as the frenzy of items sold in the months prior to Halloween have turned Halloween into a multi-million dollar profit. There was lots of information I didn’t know about, and I really enjoyed the detail on how trick or treat started from hundreds of years ago in Europe and now how it is practiced in America. This was such an interesting book! Morton explored in great detail how Halloween evolved from the start of Samhain from the first chapter ending with current day Halloween practices in America. Many aspects of Halloween are considered such as horror movies, haunted houses, and pop culture. Lisa Morton takes the readers through the past hundreds of years to explore how the world has celebrated Halloween and how the Celtic celebration of Samhain in addition to All Souls’ Day in the Catholic religion helped to shape Halloween in America. ![]() Finishing Becca by Ann Rinaldi7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Her career, prior to being an author, was a newspaper columnist.
